HISTORY OF DARTMOOR PRISON By Simon Dell

Talk  |  Seated

SIMON DELL: Simon Dell has been a regular speaker at The Wharf for some years. He is a retired police officer, having served for over 40 years through five decades and until last year was volunteering at Dartmoor Prison in the chaplaincy department. Over the years he has written numerous books about the prison and its history, and today he is here to give us a talk about the prison and its history from its inception in 1806 right through to last year in August when it temporarily closed.

TALK: Dartmoor Prison was opened in 1809 as a war prison settlement for the French and later American prisoners of war. It then became a convict prison in 1850 and had an interesting and sometimes turbulent history until 2024 when it temporarily closed in the August of that year. Simon's talk will chart the history of the prison right up to date with an array of interesting images depicting events through its history
